The Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto (University of Porto’s Faculty of Sciences)  is an organic unit within the University of Porto endowed with scientific, pedagogical, administrative and financial autonomy.

The FCUP aims to generate and disseminate knowledge in science and technology to contribute to the Grand Society Global Challenges. It is a high-education institution of excellence in exact, natural, computer and agrifood sciences and their technological applications, providing a multidisciplinary background that allies passion for discovery with academic rigour and technological pragmatism. It pursues RD&I activities to provide excellence to education, and science & technology development, boosted by the diversity of its scientific community and through international networking.

FCUP perceives its insertion into society as a third dynamic pillar through science & technology dissemination, lifelong learning and knowledge valorisation through community partnerships/consultancy and imbues in its students the ability to apply science & technology to contribute to a sustainable world, aligned with the Goals of 2030 UN Agenda for Sustainable Development and the European Green Deal. FCUP hosts six academic departments:

Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Geosciences, Environmental and Spatial Planning, Mathematics, Physics, and Astronomy and Computer Science, with highly qualified professors and research staff, responsible for 17 undergraduate degrees, 41 masters, and 21 PhD courses (a total of 4997 students) covering interdisciplinary and applied fields. Several are linked to industrial sector, and/or in collaboration with other faculties and universities. FCUP aims to reinforce its contribution to Portuguese excellence in high education, and together with its partner research units (RU) to continue as a top reference in RD&I.

FCUP’s professors and researchers engage in research, development and innovation activities, of recognized nationally and internationally standards, in 17 partner research units integrated in the national scientific and technological system.

The BlueWWater project integrates teams from the department of Biology, focused on the Ecotoxicology of Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs), Plants Biology, as well as ocean oceanography.
