Exhibition “The Endless Journey of Marine Litter and Its Consequences” Inaugurated at CMIA
More Info
CMIA has inaugurated the exhibition “The Endless Journey of Marine Litter and Its Consequences”, a showcase that invites visitors to reflect on the growing impact of plastics and microplastics on aquatic ecosystems and on our daily lives.
The exhibition addresses the issue of marine litter from a global perspective, presenting its causes, distribution and effects. Through three display structures printed on fabric, the public can learn about the most common types of waste found on Portuguese beaches, their origin, existing legislation, and the main prevention initiatives.
This activity is part of the cross-border BlueWWater project, funded by the Interreg Spain–Portugal (POCTEP) programme, which works to improve the quality of riverine, transitional and coastal water bodies through the monitoring of microplastics and emerging contaminants, as well as the assessment of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) efficiency.

Viana do Castelo City Council (CMIA) Presents Awareness Resources Developed within the BlueWWater Project
More Info
On 9 August, in Viana do Castelo, the awareness resources developed under the cross-border BlueWWater project were presented at a session held in the building next to Praça Aristides Sousa Mendes, in Praia Norte. The initiative was promoted by the CMIA of the Viana do Castelo City Council within the Interreg Spain–Portugal (POCTEP) 2021–2027 programme, with the aim of improving water body quality and tackling pollution by microplastics and emerging contaminants.
Among the educational materials presented were the publication “The Endless Journey of Marine Litter: Sources, Emissions and Impacts of Urban Solid Waste”, educational games, an exploratory kit, and publications aimed both at the school community and the general public. All materials are available for consultation and request through the Ambiente CMViana website.
The BlueWWater project, with a duration of three years (2024–2026) and a total budget of €1,357,053, involves 11 Portuguese and Spanish partners, including the Viana do Castelo City Council, which contributes €56,426. Its work includes monitoring microplastics and emerging contaminants in riverine, transitional and coastal waters, as well as studying the efficiency of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), promoting the sustainable use of water resources and supporting the implementation of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive.
Since 2002, Viana do Castelo has participated in the national Marine Litter Monitoring Programme, in collaboration with the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA). The natural area clean-ups promoted by the municipality have included more than 150 actions and around 1,900 participants, with over 2 tonnes of waste collected between June 2016 and May 2025.
The CMIA Unit continues to develop educational activities related to water, waste and sustainability, reflecting the municipality’s commitment to environmental education and the conservation of natural ecosystems.
